Oatie’s Story:
Oatie came into my life during my senior year of college, right in the middle of COVID-19. I was fostering dogs through a local San Diego rescue when this tiny three-month-old pup with the biggest personality showed up. I’ll never forget the little look of love he gave me in the car the first day I picked him up—I immediately knew we were meant for each other. Oatie quickly became my family and the emotional support of four dramatic college girls. And of course… it was a foster fail.
Since that day, Oatie has been my constant companion, always by my side through life’s ups and downs. Some might see him as just a dog, but to me, he’s family. During some of my toughest moments—when I was struggling with my health and mental well-being—his presence brought me so much comfort and has been my source of joy every day. I truly feel like I owe him the world, which is why watching him go through so much this past year has been especially heartbreaking.
Oaties IVDD Journey:
In January 2023, Oatie had his first Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) episode, which made it painful for him to walk. Thankfully, with rest and medication, he was back to his normal, chaotic self. But in November 2023, he started showing signs again, and within 24 hours, he went from limping to being completely paralyzed in his back legs.
Oatie’s IVDD episode set off a domino effect of health issues that keep stacking up, and I’ve done everything I can to keep up with his treatments. But the reality is, I just don’t have enough funds anymore to give him the care he needs. The past year has been a rollercoaster of countless vet visits, weekly trips to Tijuana for physical therapy, acupuncture, MRIs, and one difficult update after another. Right now, due to IVDD, Oatie is facing:
IVDD with multiple protruded discs – Surgery was not recommended
Skin problems – His skin condition has been getting worse, and despite multiple tests to rule out possible causes, we still don’t have answers.
Abnormal lab results – He might have Cushing’s disease and pancreatitis also due to lack of mobility
But even with all of this, Oatie is a fighter. With months of therapy, he went from needing a wheelchair to being able to stumble-walk on his own! Oatie was only three years old when he became paralyzed which is so early for IVDD. He still has so much life and energy in him, but his torn ACLs are holding him back.
I’ve had pet insurance for Oatie, but they won’t cover any of this because it’s a pre-existing condition. I’ve been paying for everything on my own and with support from my family, but I had to leave my full-time job to finish my master’s program and clinical traineeship hours, and honestly, I just can’t afford his care anymore. It breaks my heart to see him in pain every day. Anything helps—whether it’s buying a candle, sharing, or sending good vibes or prayers our way. I appreciate you all more than I can put into words. Thank you so much for reading Oatie’s story. ❤️
